Kazuo Shinohara’s (1925–2006) Residential Architecture stands as a landmark text in late-20th-century Japanese architectural thought. First published in Japan in 1964 under the title Jûtaku kenchiku, it became essential reading for generations of architecture students and exerted a profound influence on leading figures such as Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, among others. Now translated into English by architectural historian David B. Stewart (1942–2025) together with architects Shin-ichi Okuyama and Kenichi Nakamura, the book is accessible to an international readership for the first time. This edition opens up Shinohara’s complex reflections on housing and the conceptual foundations of his work. Structured in three chapters, the book begins with an analysis of traditional Japanese architecture, laying the theoretical basis of his approach.
